Camp fetish…

Monday, October 31st, 2005

After exams, I have nothing to do at home, coz I’m slacking off from training…

But since I’m so happening (lol), there is a whole list of camps lined up for me…

I’ve decided to make a list, so everyone will know where I am, instead of bugging me with questions…

28 Sep to 1 Oct was a sleepover (still a camp) at my place, with Belmond, Kian Tat, Qing Wei & Kenny.

21 Oct to 24 Oct was the ACE Camp @ Kluang, Johor, Malaysia, with half the sec twos were there, I was with SD, powder crazy ppl…

29 Oct to 30 Oct was the RCIA Retreat @ Sebana Cove, Johor, Malaysia, with my parents and church friends.

4 Nov to 6 Nov is my PSLTC in school, which I will be attending with the rest of my fellow PSLs. Not sure how it will turn out though…

7 Nov to 11 Nov is my Legion Chalet somewhere in Changi, which I am attending with QOAS pdm (Queen Of All Saints praesidium) ONLY. I am looking forward to this A LOT.

24 Nov to 27 Nov is another sleepover, with the usual ppl. I dunno who else is coming, ask Belmond for invites if you want, I’m not in charge of who is coming… (Its a surprise Birthday party for Kian Tat and Qing Wei, so hush about it, and I’m sure they don’t read this blog…)

So that is my list of camps so far, not taking into account future sleepovers, or trips to Malaysia (maybe overnight?), and this proves that I am HAPPENING… hahaha =P

So what is everyone else doing nowadays, since everyone that I talk to on MSN seems to be bored?

-NEW-

There have been two more camps, one impromtu, and the other a big one, but both at my house…

Movie marathon on the 15th to the 16th of Nov, initially scary movies, but several comedies were used to restore the balance of sanity in the house…

Class party on 10th Dec, with optional overnight stayover… A major success, maybe I should talk about it more…

-NEWer-

I will be away for tonight, at my 8am choir retreat, until tomorrow noon, when we will go carolling (after practice). So look out for us, even though I have no idea where we will be going to sing…

RCIA Retreat @ Sebana Cove, Johor, Malaysia

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, for those who don’t know. It’s a process which allows non-Catholics to become Catholic, by exposing them to the various aspects of Catholicism.

This retreat is particularly aimed at exposing them to the different types of prayer. I went, partly because I heard that it was a nice hotel, and also because my mum wanted me to go. It was conducted for the catechumens (people preparing for baptism) in St. Ignatius Church (my parish), but since my parents are involved in that ministry, I was invited along too.

We were transported to the ferry dock by bus, on which certain people felt sick, and were frightened of the boat ride to Sebana Cove, which is accessible fastest by ferry. However, I did not suffer from motion sickness, as I was fast asleep, mostly on the boat and somewhat on the bus. When we reached there, I got off, and we had to wait in the hot sun to clear customs, instead of in the cool air-con (back in Singapore). After that, we had breakfast (imported from Singapore) in the function room (called Neptune), and then settled down for the first segment of the retreat, after doing several action songs to wake us up. This did indeed liven the spirits of both old and young alike. I was not really paying attention during the talks, since I was tired from packing the previous night and from the early rising that morning.

We also had a short ‘washing of feet’ ceremony, usually done on Maundy Thursday, but in this case, it was done to commemorate the ritual done on the start of the Easter Triduum, which was what the retreat was focussing on, by the way. First, the priest went around washing several of the catechumens’ feet, followed by the taking up of the task by anyone who felt ready, and I was one of the first take a bucket and cloth, but I didn’t know who to chose, my mum or dad, so my mum told me to go to my dad, and I didn’t really know how to do it, so I just poured water on, and then kinda dabbed his feet dry =P… Always making me do the dirty work… Just kidding =P… Then near the end of the ceremony, someone came around to ask if our feet had been washed, and I didn’t want to say no, but I hesitated and that was enough to make him tell me to take off my socks… The water was also quite cold, and the drying part was pretty ticklish =P, hehe, my weirdness taking note of insignificant details, when I should be concentrating on the spiritual aspect of service, and how the greatest must be the humblest servant, coz if you exalt yourself you will be humbled, but when you humble yourself, you will be exalted.

After that segment, we had a sharing in which I got to know the group members (of the group I joined) a bit better, due to an introduction, which I didn’t really listen to, they knew me and we started from that and worked our way up =P.

So on the first day, I had quite a bit of fun, particularly during meals (which were all buffets), and eating more than I could digest =P. The music ministry was fantastic, with excellent guitarists, and good singers too, it was something to remember, though they were from Christ The King church.

After lunch, we checked out our rooms, and apparently, I was living in a suite with my parents, with a spacious bathroom, and a large (not necessarily comfortable) sofa bed, which I had all to myself. I would have fallen asleep if not for the fact that I was late for the next segment of the retreat, so I “hurried” back to Neptune and found that no one was settled down yet (all still chatting and walking around), even though we were off schedule.

We then had The Way of the Cross, which is a meditation on the Passion, and is milestoned by “stations”, or scenes from the Gospel depicting the stages leading to Jesus’ death. This one was captivating because it was acted out, instead of just read out, and it helped us to imagine what really happened, even though the acting wasn’t of top quality, it was very good, and I enjoyed that.

We had mass sometime in the afternoon and I received a part of the big host, instead of the small ones usually given out (because I was last in line), and I also took and extra big “sip” of the wine =P.

The next memorable activity was the reflection during quiet time, which we were supposed to spend reflecting (on what I don’t know), but I happened to fall asleep outside on the sofa =P. Oh well, I was looking forward to spending some time by the riverside, with the breeze blowing my face, like I experienced several times before at the beach, but I missed it due to unexpected circumstances.

During that discussion, I was a bit sleepy and didn’t really listen, and my mind was wandering off… We were then released for our baths before dinner, but I went to the end of the jetty to experience the sea breeze, and I discovered that I was just in time for the sunset, and I watched it till it disappeared behind some clouds, so I went to bathe for dinner.

Dinner was good (maybe even too good), and I ate till I needed to walk a bit, just to help it digest =P. So I accompanied Danielle, my friend while she looked for some mosquito tabs thingy… Anyway, since it was dark, I was imagining a crazy murderer jumping out of the bushes and killing us both in the most disgusting manner possible… How weird I can get =P…

Anyway, after dinner, we had a Taize session. Taize is actually the name of a town/village in France, open to all Christians, but concentrating on youth. It is also a type of music, mostly hymns (religious songs), and repetitive chanting, which enhances prayer, because it does not take much to sing the same line over and over again… But I happen to be a veteran at Taize music, so I helped to liven the session by singing harmony (an alternative tune which harmonizes, or intertwines, nicely with the melody, or the main tune). That was a very nice session, and was followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, during which the Taize chanting carried on. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is simply the exposed host (the big white circular flat bread you see at mass), and people praying in front of it, since we believe that its essence, not the appearance, has been transformed into the body of Christ. It’s a bit hard to explain, but basically, I liked the Taize music, and how it helped and enhanced prayer in that dim-lit room, with the candles around the statue of the cross, and the sight of all of us gathered around that “altar”, was really spectacular.

That session was followed by a well-deserved night of rest, but obviously not long enough, since I had much trouble getting up the next morning, after which I made my way to Neptune again. We had a session on the rosary (which was a bit boring, coz it was led by my catechism teacher), and then we prayed it, followed by breakfast, which I pigged out on again… And had to walk out to the jetty with Danielle again, and it was nice but a bit too hot, with the morning sun glaring down on us… How irritating, making me sweat =P… But, anyway, we had another session after that, which I didn’t particularly listen to, coz I can’t remember what it was about… We had a reflection too, a pledge or commitment to improve ourself spiritually, and I didn’t listen to instructions, so I had to take mine home manually instead of them having to post it to me (in a month’s time), which I feel is more meaningful, since it serves as a reminder of a pledge you took and tried (or failed) to keep a month earlier… But that was a nice thing for me, since I used that time to write a personal letter to God, even though it may never reach Him, He still knows what I wrote, so =P…

That was followed by mass and the pledges were an offering to God, made during offertory (during the mass), but I didn’t exactly put my own envelope in there, since it was not meant for the same purpose as all the rest. “I will not be compared to the barbarous multitudes of men”… But that is not what I meant to say, so after mass we had lunch, in which I ate too much again, but this time we only took a short walk back to Neptune, where I had a nice time chatting with others, and also making name tags, which I discarded most of them, to discover that I only kept my original white one and the pink one, both custom-made by me… So after that was a sharing session of the whole retreat, what we liked or disliked, and many commented on the music ministry being vital to the success of the retreat, and I totally agree.

Then began the journey home, which started with the queue in the sun again, followed by a nice song session in the boat, in which I “performed by popular demand/request”, and I did a duet with the guitarist, singing “You Are Near” (which is a hymn btw). On the way, Alan kept on making jokes, keeping the boat in a good mood, but I have to say that several of the jokes were a bit mean and *childish* (by my standards =P)… But they did liven up the mood, even when we got pulled over by the coastal guard who felt that its presence needed to be felt, while looking for smugglers (randomly)… The bus journey back to church was fun too, and I took out my stuffed dog to sleep on, and almost dropped my handphone (which I clutched in my hand) in the process, but was prodded awake by Danielle, and I kept it in my bag… Thanks for prodding so hard =P

All in all, the retreat was great fun, but I think that it was a bit too packed full of activities, with not enough free time, to relax (or to sleep) or to swim in the pool (which looked nice, but I didn’t have any time to)… Although I did like the nature, and the jetty (my fave spot), I felt that I was a bit cooped up indoors, missing out on the chance to enjoy the serenity and peace of the nature that surrounded us…

However, I think I have grown spiritually, no matter how small the change may be, it is still one step closer =P

Sadly, my name is not up there, coz I was involved in something else (wasting insect repellent), and sorry if I missed anyone out, just tell me and I’ll edit the list…

Keep having fun with powder, and rock on…

ACE Camp Kluang, Johor, Malaysia

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

ACE stands for Adventure Camps and Expeditions for those who don’t know, and its the one run by my school, not by some company (well, PROTEGE INC. helped out…)

Sec 208 was code named SD, or Silvery Dome, named after the silvery dome in our old school at Bras Basah. I was grouped by register number into SD 3, and slept in Tent C, coz of lack of space in Tent E, my original tent.

Anyway, the general outcome of the camp was fun, but the living conditions sucked… The bus journey there was fun, sat next to Matthew, and although I didn’t manage to sleep like I planned to, Lennon was busy telling jokes (you can guess what type) to the whole bus while the tour guide was talking to himself over the mike… haha =P

The first day there was okay, when I first got there, it was quite nice, to see my campsite and to see the pictures of previous ACE Camps in real life, of the hill and the longhouse… But setting up the tent was not very enjoyable, coz of the scorching heat and the dirt inside the tent… The food was good, and I liked the flavoured rice (coloured too)… After that, we had jungle survival, in the oil palm plantation nearby. Although it wasn’t very interesting or eventful, it was fun to me because I never got to do this type of thing beofre… This taught me that I would die if I was stranded in the jungle, coz our group couldn’t make fire, couldn’t get pure water, couldn’t MAKE (not find) a good shelter, and couldn’t find food too (but Mr Chua didn’t plant any on the first day, only on the second day…) They had a powder bath (more like war) after Jungle Survival (with Prickly Heat), pouring it everywhere (face, torso, arms, behind, *down there* too…), going mad with powder (especially people like Edgar and Jun Jia). Anyway, we took photos of whatever we found or made (or tried to make) during Jungle Survival, and made a nice report to hand up, partially in my handwriting too, signed it and pasted our group photo there (SD 3)… And we did that hurriedly after dinner during reflection time… That night, sleeping early was impossible, with Chris and Jun Jia talking the loudest and letting no one sleep earlier than them… I couldn’t sleep until 1+, and scared everyone by talking not very often but out of the blue with my eyes closed… haha =P. It rained that night, but not very heavy, and I had not bad a sleep before the next day…

Anyway, the next day, I woke up at 5.45, washed up and the activities for the day was “combat mission” (river activities) and mountain climbing. River rafting was not that great, coz of our failure to build a competent raft to cross the river, and also because there was not enough time for anything else (the river crossing and casualty rescue, involving pulling yourself across the river and carrying someone around it on a throne of four interlocking arms respectively)… The river bed was so muddy, it felt like quicksand and I had to swim instead of stand to get from one place to another… Anyway, my shoes after that were waterlogged and brown (instead of white), and they were kept for canoeing (which wasn’t as bad). I didn’t go for Gunung Lambak coz of my CONVENIENT foot injury (also saving me from morning PT), and as a result, I had a chance to become a temporary ACE leader for SOL (205), who did Jungle Survival. I went around, laughing at their feeble and unsuccessful attempts to make fire and build shelter (like my leaders did for mine), and actually tried to help a bit too… So that wasn’t TOO bad, and the others had fun at Lambak too, and they asked me what I did so I told them secretively that I had fun being an ACE leader =P… That night, I slept a bit earlier than the day before, coz I was tired, but had to wake up at 3 or 4 to close the door of the tent, due to the storm that leaked into our tent, and caused me to be sleeping in a pool of water… So then I woke up again at 5 and couldn’t sleep, so I washed up and went to the canteen area to sleep (which is forbidden, by the way)… So that night was the worst, coz I didn’t get enough sleep due to the storm that gave me a “nice” bath in the middle of the night…

The third day was more fun, because of the activities, orienteering in the morning (and I became a temporary ACE leader again, due to my foot), while they ran (more like walked…) around looking for coloured keychains at map co-ordinates and plotted landmarks on maps, which I knew the locations of, due to my privileged position. I also had some intelligent conversation with Mrs Ho, teacher-in-charge of SD and the instructor-in-charge of that station, making friends and connections for next year =P… After they were finished guessing the colours of the keychains instead of actually looking for them, I helped to mark the answers, while they played some weird goggle game… After lunch, we had canoeing in the lake, led by Mr Nathan, accompanied by Mrs J, Mrs Ho, Bro Jason, and Mr Lai… That was fun, because me and Matthew were quite a good pair, working together (most of the time), and always one of the first few in front… After dinner, we had a nice campfire, which was fun, but a bit boring, since we were VERY tired, and dying to go home…

208 or SD, powder crazy people, also almost always first for meals… I will miss you all next year with all your craziness and may our friendships never part…

Gabriel

Last Day of School…

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Today was the last day of school, and we watched “The Bourne Identity” in the PAC, and Lennon and me were play-fighting in between short-lived periods of truces.

Besides that, today was fun, especially at the end when we went mad in the classroom… No one was cleaning up, everyone was just sitting around or playing or chatting… Then we took class photos, see the “MY FRIENDS” album.

Anyway, it hasn’t sunk in that my results are out, and school is too… Just like it didn’t sink in that the exams were so near a few weeks ago…

Btw, despite my lousy 12th place finish in class placings, I managed to get into English TDP, and Physics too (but I rejected that).

Anyway, I spent the day with Belmond, we went to my house first (for me to collect money), where we played Xbox for awhile, then we went out again to cut hair…

So anyway, my results suck, ACE Camp is tomorrow, and my foot is fractured… How more fun can my life get?

Fun Gallivanting & Celebration…

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

Today, we got back our EOY exam results…

Sadly, its nothing at all like I anticipated, much lower actually…

A disappointment (to most), but Kenny got so high for everything, and everyone is so jealous… We all decided to dao him after a while of tolerance of his brilliance… haha

Here are my results for those who care;

English 75 A1
Chinese 51 C6
Science 79 A1
Mathematics 81 A1
History 44!!! E8
Geography 68 B3
Literature 75 A1

Total 472
Average 67.43%

Physics had something wrong with the MCQ section, so it was sent in for remarking, affecting my science marks, and hopefully pulling my marks up (but everyone else’s too…).

The marks overall weren’t THAT bad, but still an unexpected disappointment… So we (Belmond, Kian Tat, Qing Wei and me) went out after school for lunch and gallivanting, as we are famous for… We went to Plaza Singapura, and had Pizza Hut there, me having free stuff and all…

Then we went shopping and not really accomplishing anything, (except Belmond buying underwear… =P), and ACE Camp looming near, with a list of stuff I haven’t packed, or bought…

ACE Camp, that reminds me… I have “sustained an incomplete fracture of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot”, simply meaning I mildly fractured the right side of my right foot… How am I to climb mountains and kayak around islands with an injured foot? Interesting… I can’t wait to find out…

Anyway, now that I know how badly I’ve done, I might as well move on (since I never really cared about my results in the first place), and focus on other things, like surviving in ACE Camp. Which reminds me, I had better go pack now…

News Flash

Monday, October 17th, 2005

I just went to the clinic, where I had an X-ray done, and my foot injury (the current one) was not a sprain, but an incomplete fracture.

For clarification purposes, I thought I sprained my foot last Monday, 10th of Oct, at the Interhouse Touch-Rugby game (which I didn’t actually play in), but I was flattening drink cans after the event, and landed wrongly on the right side of my right foot, and sprained it. However, I just found out that it is a tiny fracture along the right side of my right foot.

So anyway, this is just a brief news flash in my life, for those who are actually interested… haha =P

It was an "incomplete fracture of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot", for those who can understand that (since I obviously don’t)…

Madness…

Why do I have a fetish for music in foreign languages?

Its somehow nicer than English music, but I have no idea why…

Hitori by the Gospellers
Hele Mele No Lilo in the Lilo and Stitch Soundtrack
Zhong by Sun Yanzi
Rasa Sayang by Dick Lee (mostly in English, but its a Malay folk song)

There’s the list of my favourite non-English songs, with the exception of the last one.

PS, I’ve got the MP3s, so if you want them, just ask me.

-NEW-

The Romanian song Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone (as popularized worldwide by the Chicken Little cinema ads) has me officially addicted, majority of the blame goes to legion chalet, when all of my friends were playing it over and over again… I found it so catchy, its my favourite song right now…
