Legion Chalet 2005
Friday, November 25th, 2005I had a bad start, since I had to pack for this 6-day 5-night camp one or two hours before I had to leave the house… But I managed, and in the end, I reached Tanah Merah MRT Station quite early, as I had to wait for a lot of people who were later than me…
Anyway, when we got there, we settled in and made ourselves comfortable in the room of our choice. Marcus and I chose a rather empty room, deposited our bags and went downstairs to help with the organizing of the settling-in period. For example, I helped to organize and put up the affirmation envelopes so that people can send affirmation notes to one another…
So anyway, "Britney" (aka Melvin) taught us (Marcus and I) actions for Pamela Anderson and Madonna respectively. We made up a lot of crazy stuff out of boredom which I won’t put up here for the sake of preserving my reputation of a certain level of sanity… So basically, we had this weird trio of guys acting as famous female pop-stars in a Catholic camp… Scandalous!
A while later, when we went up to put some stuff in our bags, we found out that the Sec 1’s had taken over our room, so we were kicked out to Room 4, where we spent some time just chatting… Eugene "preyed" upon Chris, and it is not something to be revealed here, it is unexpressable with mere words. But eventually, Chris was attached to the Charlie’s Devils (even up till today), and I was surprised when he declined the invitation to Room 3, where most of the other S1’s were.
When Mr Ang got wind of what was happening in Room 3, there was much need for a sharing session, and one was called for, in the midst of a game including Legionaries from both Room 3 and 4. So there was a peace settled on that matter, in which some bags were physically thrown out of Room 3 (thankfully Marcus and mine were not among them). But after everything was said and done, the mood was neither dampened nor the atmosphere tense, but we went back to our game instead =P, how cool is that!
Call it luck, call it fortune, but is was unlucky as well as unfortunate for the people in Room 3 when they got locked out of their own room, from the inside (but no one was inside the time it got locked… A blessing in disguise, that I moved to Room 4… We tried everything, keys, martial arts, rugby, nothing would work. That was around 1 am, when no outside help was available. In the end, the poor Room 3-ers had to bunk in with the ones they kicked out, the bulk of them coming just next door to Room 4. When I first walked in, it was madness! 5 on the bed, and 5 on the floor, with more people coming in… In the end, we had 6 on the bed, and 9 on the floor. I squeezed to one side (sound impossible to you?) to accomodate Jordan, who happily walked in when all of us were ready to sleep…
However, talking of sleep, that night I could get none, perhaps because of the many cups of mocha that I had indulged in that night. For the whole night, I lay(or sat) awake, watching and listening to those around me, and I noticed that quite a few people talk in their sleep… But other than that, Jordan kept on waking up (though I have no idea why), till I zipped him up in my sleeping bag and gave him my doggy (as a pillow). I spent the rest of the night checking everyone else for signs of discomfort. How nice to know when you have someone watch you sleep =P … NOT!!!
On one day, we went out bowling at SAFRA, where I went trigger-happy with Mr Ang’s camera and started taking pics of everyone bowling (except myself, who is immune to opportunities in which I make myself vulnerable to making a fool of myself)… The others played LAN at some crazily overcrowded shop.I busied myself with lollipops throughout the duration of the bowling games. After that, most of the bowlers went to the arcade to race cars, but I find crowded areas to be quite disturbing, so I stayed in the bowling alley. Does that make me claustrophobic?
On another occasion (though I can’t remember when), we went to see the Exorcism of Emily Rose, where I had to keep Marcus from running out of the theatre in the middle of the movie… I also added to the screams in the cinema (just for fun), even though it was my second time watching the show. At the end, some people were quite freaked, like Joel (Jamie) who passed me his movie ticket, instead of throwing it away (don’t ask me why he did it, I have no clue), and I didn’t really comment much on the movie, coz I had already watched it, and none of it was as shocking or captivating as before… But I listened to their "favourite" scenes and poses in the movie, and also commented on some of my friend’s behaviour during the movie… Like Marcus’ overwhelming fear that I helped to keep at bay, and Hansel’s thumb-sucking habit, and Jared Moneteiro’s curled up position… After that, I told Mr Ang to watch out for a herd of boys stampeding to his room at 3 am in the morning, and also recalled a song with the lyrics "it’s 3 am and I must be lonely" (Matchbox Twenty)… Freaky =P …
In the previous chalet, hardly anyone swam when we went to the beach. However, I managed to turn things around this year… Majority of the Legion swam, after I led the first few in, then they gathered even more followers, and eventually, most were in the water and loving it. Anyway, I had fun diving underwater then skimming the seabed before rising vertically to scare someone who thought I had materialised from nowhere. Since the water was pretty murky, I managed to shock a few people with that stunt, even though it got salt water in my nose and mouth… But it was worth it, as well as the time I spent haunting everyone with diseased hands, though it was just black mud from the bottom of the sea. It didn’t look much like mud though I must say, to give them some justification for their fear. I could chase people with closed hands, and then they would run when they saw what was oozing out from inside my fists. Kinda gross, but I AM the definition of weird =P.
That was really memorable, other than burying Mathias in a heap of sand, which I suggested =P. Even more massive than burying Edgar’s feet, which was also quite a spectaular sight. But to bury someone alive is just morbid, especially in sand inhabited by slimy, wriggly and tiny creatures that you cannot stop from crawling into nooks and crannies in your clothes eventually leading to places such as… I’ll stop this elaboration here.
Another memorable event were the reflections, which were conducted at an impossibly unearthly hour, when everyone is in their "most alert" state of mind. I, myself, have to admit that it was a rather precarious situation, in which one shared his opinions of the day’s happenings, while everyone else is thinking of their sleeping bag =P. But they were conducted in such a manner that even though the sharings may not have hit home, the atmosphere sure did, with the path to the Reflection Room candle-lit, as well as the room itself. The whole Legion gathered in one room, in silence never thought possible with adolescent boys, nothing could ever surpass the beauty of silence…
I did find the chalet a great place to get away from all my stress, and just feel bored. But bored in a good way, since relaxation requires the absence of excitement, right? Maybe not, but I thought that the chalet was a getaway from life, just with friends to be with, to talk to, and to have fun with… That was the ultimate experience of the chalet for me. Other than bonding, of course, which was the purpose of the chalet…
I hope that the Legion had fun, especially since we don’t get to do this type of thing very often, but just keep in mind that we need friendships to cherish and to preserve. It takes so many things to build up trust, but one tiny incident to tear it all down.
FRENZ 4EVA,
Gabriel
P.S. All my affirmations disintegrated in the laundry… I managed to salvage a few of them. I apologize to the rest, whose notes are currently a clump of multi-coloured paper…
